Antonia's, Hammersmith, Restaurant Review

By Fiona Keating on January 26th 2010

On a chilly Friday lunchtime, I popped into Antonia’s as I’d been tipped off that the restaurant had just been nominated for an Ethical Good Food Award 2009, under the category ‘Best Local Cafe’, specialising in ‘Authentic Mediterranean Cuisine’.

It’s conveniently located on the corner of Hammersmith Broadway. The interiors are brightly lit, with a lively atmosphere. The cafe has a daily changing lunch menu of fresh soups, salads, quiches, frittatas, classic tortillas, and chef’s specials, all made on the premises that morning. For those with a sweet tooth, there are cakes, desserts, ice creams and sorbets. It's a great place for business lunches and pre-theatre dining.

I started with a chicken and sweet corn soup served with focaccia bread. Winter and warmer spring to mind with this filling, chowder-like dish. I was chilled to the bone, and this brought warmth flooding through my body – and was very filling, too.

Some of the specials were already finished and I liked the philosophy of “we only make so many, and when it’s gone, it’s gone.” The sign of truly freshly prepared food.

For the main course, I chose the chorizo sausage with red peppers and chilli pizza. The 11-inch pizza bases are freshly made on the premises every day. This was lovely and crunchy with a meaty, spicy taste.

The dessert of sticky toffee pudding was just the right size portion and not too rich so I didn’t feel I’d overdone it. The service is good and the staff seem only too pleased to talk about the food, preparation and philosophy. If I worked near Hammersmith, I’d make this a regular once a week lunch or after-work chowdown. It’s personable and informal, making it a great place to unwind from the stresses of work.
