Book review: To be someone

Back to the sixties

An album by The Who had a huge impact for writer Peter Meadows as it formed the basis of his new book To Be Someone. A rough early version of the story was sent to Pete Townshend who gave permission for the story to be based on Jimmy, the character from his 1972 best-selling album Quadrophenia. In his book Peter, a taxi driver from Stevenage, tells the story of 18-year-old Jimmy and how the influences of the 60s around him turn him from a cocky, happy and confused teenager into a scooter-wrecking, car-taking, drug-dealing and cocaine-smuggling phoney gangster. The book feels real throughout with larger than life characters.
