Considering adoption as an option? – Pam’s story
Two and a half years have passed since we received the phone call to tell us that we had been matched with a little boy. That day will be ingrained in my memory forever and the emotion of it only surpassed by the moment when we first clapped eyes on our four year old son.
My husband and I had struggled to conceive for some time. We had various fertility treatments before deciding that we really could not face another round of IVF. Adoption had always been something that we had thought about and so, after taking some time to come to terms with our decision and to feel as certain as we could do, we contacted KCC Social Services for some information.
The process started with attendance at an information evening and progressed through to being approved as prospective adopters. It was intense but enlightening. We met some amazing people along the way and were supported by a great social worker. The Home Study, which is a series of meetings where a social worker explores all areas of your life, your family and your past, was hard going at times but we felt a real sense of purpose throughout and were confident that eventually we would have a family.
Looking back at the adoption process I remember sitting in the preparation course that my husband and I attended feeling quite in awe of the adoptive parent who came to speak with us. This was a woman who had been through it all and come out the other side to tell her tale. Now, I am one of those parents and enjoy speaking to people who are going through the process, giving them an insight into our journey.
Adopting our son has, without a doubt, been the most extraordinary and fulfilling experience of our lives. There have been challenges and difficult times but there has also been great joy, wonderful surprises and lots of love and laughter.
As we embark on our second adoption journey, National Adoption Week, which runs between 31st October 2011 and 6th November 2011, is upon us. I am hoping that those who have considered adoption as an option will come forward and take the first steps to find out more.
