‘Fabulous Not Fawlty’ as English Riviera Storms the Trip Advisor Awards
By Anita Newcombe on January 23rd 2012
The ghost of Basil Fawlty was finally laid to rest on South Devon’s English Riviera as the coastal resort achieved outstanding results in the recent Trip Advisor Awards.
Even Channel 4’s hugely popular docu-comedy The Hotel based on a Torquay establishment, couldn’t slow down the public’s votes as Torquay’s Charterhouse Hotel wonTrip Advisor’s Top UK Hotel Award and its Best UK Service Award.
And the accolades just kept stacking up, as the Charterhouse was just one of several Torquay hotels that captured travellers hearts, making it into the admired Top 25 UK Hotels listing; Crimdon Dene Hotel was voted into 5th place, and the Cary Court Hotel bagged 12th place. A further raft of positive reviews took Torquay’s Elmdene and Kingsholm Hotels into 3rd and 7th places for Best UK Service.
The Charterhouse Hotel in Torquay on South Devon’s English Riviera, beat hundreds of hotels from around the UK when it was named Travellers’ Choice for Top UK Hotel. Based on customer reviews, many of the five-star ratings praised the 10-bedroom hotel for its ‘warm and genuine hospitality’ and ‘superb’ breakfast.
Carolyn Custerson, Chief Executive of the English Riviera Tourism Company, points out that the sheer volume of Torquay winners at these customer-based awards proves the English Riviera has star quality as a holiday destination. "The English Riviera is a hugely popular resort for visitors from all over the UK and Europe and we’re delighted that the warmth and professionalism of our hoteliers has been such a hit with our visitors."
Marion and Les Ward, owners, are delighted with Charterhouse’s double win. Les said: "Small independent hotels are the future. We offer our guests a really warm welcome, making them feel at home with tea or coffee on arrival and a chat about where to go and what to do during their stay. We’ve refurbished all our bedrooms and we give top quality breakfasts with local Devon produce and homemade bread and jam. Our top priority is for our guests to enjoy their holiday.”
Marion said, “A warm welcome is not just about the quality of the rooms. We love to look after people who may be tired after their journey. A smile and a friendly face helps people to relax so we put our heart and soul into the welcome. Some people are on a short-break so we want to help them find the places they’ll most enjoy locally.”
As well as award-winning hotels, Torquay offers the cleanest beaches in England, stunningly beautiful coast path walks, picturesque marinas, a range of excellent restaurants and bars, a host of attractions and world-class events such as theworld-famous Agatha Christie Festival; with a palm-fringed waterfront redolent of France’s Cote d’Azur.
