A photographer friend once won a competition with a shot of spring lamb leaping up at the side of its mother. But despite the judges’ praise for his composition and sheer good luck, the picture was a fraud. Having banked his cheque and placed his prize on the mantlepiece he confessed that the lamb wasn’t jumping – it had been dropped by the farmer who was just out of shot, writes Paul Mackenzie.
No such skulduggery was needed for John Cobham to capture this stunning shot of a seagull wheeling over Arnside. He assures us that no birds were harmed in the taking this picture.
John’s wonderful photo is one of the best of the latest batch that readers have uploaded to our website – and we’d love you to follow their lead.
We want to create a comprehensive photographic record of Lancashire and the Lakes in this historic year. Not only is it Preston Guild year, but the eyes of the world will be on the UK for the Olympics and the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee celebrations and we want to mark the year by capturing a permanent record of the way our county looks.
Whether it’s a picture of your house, your street, your village green or your city centre, add it to our gallery of readers’ photographs and help us record the way we live in 2012.

Congratulations John - an amazing image. To have achieved such depth of field whilst "freezing" the bird in flight, I'm interested to know what shutter speed, aperture, ISO and focal length lens you used. I've examined your image but the metadata has been stripped from it.
