Millionaires’ rows - Cheshire's des-res homes

By Cheshire Life on January 28th 2012

We’re told that times are tough everywhere - even in Cheshire’s ‘golden triangle’ - but a survey has revealed a rise in the average property price in the most desirable parts of the county over the last year.

Cheshire is the location for some of the most luxurious properties in the UK and many homes in Alderley Edge, Prestbury and Wilmslow come with a multi-million pound price-tag.

Research commissioned by Investec Specialist Private Bank has discovered there were 277 residential properties in Cheshire on the market for £1 million or more during the third quarter of 2011.

Their collective value totalled £543.32 million, which equates to £1.96 million per property.

The most expensive street outside southern England is Withinlee Road, in Prestbury, which is the top northern address to feature on the list of Britain’s priciest places to live.

The rural road, known locally as ‘Footballers’ Alley’, as it is favoured by Manchester’s premiership footballers, has an average house price of £1,649,000.

As a magnet for wealth, Cheshire has attracted many famous residents including Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson, Manchester City boss Roberto Mancini, and property entrepreneur Peter Jones -not to mention a myriad of soap star celebrities.

Residents who aren’t famous acquire a certain status associated with living in the areas with celebrity cachet, evident through streets being dubbed nick names such as ‘Millionaires’ Row’.

Macclesfield Road in Alderley Edge is second in the list of most expensive streets, with an average home costing £1.3 million.

Residential properties in Torkington Road, Wilmslow which topped £1,285,000 were also some of the most expensive in the north.

All of the top ten most expensive roads in the North West can be found in Cheshire, with several of them around Altrincham, including Bradgate Road, South Downs Road and Barry Rise. All the rest are within Prestbury, Wilmslow, Alderley Edge, Macclesfield.

Several other million pound properties are on Hill Top, Rappax Road and Broadway in Hale, near Altrincham.

The research, which looked at 21,982 residential properties across 10 regions with the highest number of properties valued at £1m plus during the third quarter of 2011, revealed an 11% increase in property prices over the same period in 2010.
