Traditionally, it’s the ladies who spend ages in front of the mirror getting ready for a night out, but this festive season, the tables are turning.

As the latest season of The Only Way Is Essex draws to a close on Wednesday, it seems the TOWIE effect has made its mark on Milton Keynes men.  Harbourside bar and restaurant, The Living Room has carried out new research revealing men are taking a greater pride in their appearance and just like TOWIE star and lover of his own reflection Mark Wright, spending longer than ever before getting ready for a night on the town.

  • A third of men say they use beauty products, with one in five using them daily.  Nearly a quarter pluck their eyebrows, 17% wax or shave their bodies regularly and 11% use fake tan to give themselves a healthy glow.
  • Furthermore, 14% admit to wearing makeup to enhance their appearance, with concealer the most popular item.

The Living Room General Manager David Pugh comments: “The Living Room has always attracted a stylish clientele. We’re looking forward to welcoming equally well-dressed and well-groomed guys and girls to The Living Room this December to party with like-minded fashion-focused party goers during the festive season.”

“This year, the festive season should be extra special. Nearly three-quarters of respondents say they have gone out less this year than last, but with a 40% rise in the number of nights out expected during the final month of the year, people are making up for their frugal ways and ending the year on a high.

The girls do still take the biscuit when it comes to how long it takes to get ready, spending an average 50 minutes preparing for a night out.  This increases to one hour 10 minutes for special occasions such as Christmas parties.

Haircuts, waxes, fake tans and manicures are among the girls’ favourite regular beauty treatments, with 70% spending £30 to £50 on such treats each month.

Clothes are just as important, with the average outfit for the ladies costing £200 and seeing them through up to 12 nights out.

As Christmas approaches, three-quarters of women will buy a new outfit for the work party and most will plan ahead to ensure they are the belle of the ball.

David adds: “Men are giving their girlfriends a run for their money in the beauty stakes. These days, they’re not afraid to enhance their appearance and are using skincare products and makeup to ensure they look their best.

“Christmas definitely brings out the best in both sexes and it’s great to see everyone dressed up to the nines.”
