Working with the Children's Trust
It’s been a lively summer and, with general global doom and gloom, it has been good to be involved in weddings from Richmond to Scotland, proposals from Venice to India and anniversaries of people still in love after 40 years says Nutfield-based designer goldsmith Roger Elliott
During the summer designer goldsmith Roger Elliott was delighted to be able to support the splendid local charity the Childrens Trust, who are based in Tadworth, where children and young people with acquired brain damage receive care and rehabilitation.
"I invited one of their patients, 13-year-old Rebekah, to the studio to make a piece of jewellery for herself," he says. "Her sister and a nurse accompanied her. The sisters each made, starting from a short bar of silver, a solid bangle with semi precious bead decoration.
"Rebekah enjoyed the experience, overcoming her limited dexterity by sheer determination. She performed milling, soldering, cutting, drilling, polishing and beadwork operations."
Roger was enormously impressed by her perseverance with the complex skills she had to learn and put into practice to create the piece, and also donated one of his Oyster pendants as the top raffle prize for a lavish ball in aid of the charity held at the Savoy Hotel.
"This was an 18 carat gold Oyster pendant set with a fine quality diamond," he says. "The lucky winner Diana recently came to the studio to select her half carat diamond and choose her gold colour."

The white gold renaissance attracts the Dames
After several years of white gold playing the more popular role in jewellery, yellow gold is returning to the leading fashion magazines in a big way, says Nutfield-based designer goldsmith Roger Elliott
WHEN Dame Judi Dench wore a yellow gold pendant and matching earrings at a New York film premiere earlier this year, the tide was beginning to turn.
The pendant, created by Roger Elliott, was set with a one carat ‘D Flawless’ diamond.
“I am delighted that Dame Judi wore these pieces to such an important event," says Roger. "I chose to design her pieces using yellow gold, as the latest trend in jewellery is a move away from white gold to yellow.”
Designer goldsmith Roger Elliott designs exclusive contemporary jewellery from his studio in Nutfield, near Reigate, specialising in high grade gemstones set in contemporary jewellery. He sources and selects the stones individually for each client to ensure they get the best possible stone for their budget.
A diamond expert, working in gold and platinum, Roger uses only high-grade diamonds (G VS to D Flawless and also ‘fancy’ colours) and the finest sapphires, rubies, emeralds, tanzanite, black opal, aquamarine and other more rare precious stones.
Any design can be produced to a client’s requirements, but the pieces in Roger’s own collections focus on the more adventurous gem settings. The Oyster collection was designed to show a diamond to its full advantage. This jewellery can be made in yellow gold, white gold or platinum. But while this is Roger’s signature design, it is frequently made on a bespoke basis allowing for variations to suit the individual.
In fact almost all Roger’s jewellery is made on a bespoke basis for each individual client.
While diamond solitaire rings are the most popular for engagements, an unusual one off piece Roger recently created is the Bouquet ring design in 18ct white gold, set with fine green tsavorites, mandarin spessartites and diamonds with gems totalling two carats.
He also designed five matching teardrop pendants for five grand-daughters. Four chose yellow gold with a pink sapphire, while the fifth opted for aquamarine – this one in white gold.
Certain gems are certainly more suited to one colour or the other regardless of fashion.
One rather unusual commission is a special ‘clasp ring’ for a client with arthritic knuckles. The ring opens fully to bypass any knuckle size by means of a hinge and clasp opening.
The client is keen for others with enlarged knuckles to benefit from this idea and, as with all Roger’s jewellery, a clasp ring can be made from 18 carat yellow gold, white gold or platinum. The clasp can, of course be designed into many other styles of ring.
Roger’s studio in Nutfield is generally open for drop in visitors, but an appointment may be preferable. The studio provides a relaxed, informal and comfortable environment for visitors to view samples of jewellery and discuss gemstone topics.
