British artist Nicholas Arroyave-Portela explores his Colombian heritage through a ceramic work titled Todo Sobre Mi Padre (Everything to do with my father), which will exhibit in Farnham over the coming months.

A rhythmic and contemplative series of wall panels, the artist explains it as: “a personal journey looking at aspects of my identity. Specifically, I was charting my father’s various migration routes throughout his life in order to make sense of where I belonged.”

The exhibition runs from Tuesday January 17 to Saturday March 24 and Padre will be accompanied by a new work (to be installed in early February) produced for the exhibition.

Comprising a wall-mounted installation of 260 thrown vessels with the word Consciousness cut into a middle section, this second work refers to the Mayan Long Count Calendar which is said to be ending around 21 December 2012.

“Many of the apocalyptic interpretations of the Mayan Calendar have gained infamy,” he says. “However, I have personally always been fascinated and intrigued by the calendar as a vehicle to explore the notion of cycles, their beginnings and their ends.”

Nicholas Arroyave-Portela’s acclaimed ceramics are in public collections including Ashmolean Museum, Oxford and Philadelphia Museum of Art, USA.
