Poppy Day novel raises remembrance funds

By Clare Bourke on November 11th 2011

A NEW novel entitled Poppy Day is helping to raise funds for the Royal British Legion.

Hitchin-based media production specialist, TIP Ltd, teamed up with creative design agency, Peachy Creative Ltd, and Stevenage businesswoman and editor, Dawn Mimnagh, to bring Poppy Day – the debut novel of new author, Amanda Prowse, to the marketplace.

The novel tells of an army wife called Poppy Day who sets out to rescue her husband, Martin, after he is captured in Afghanistan. Every penny of profit from Poppy Day will raise money for the Royal British Legion, which is spending £30 million on creating and running a state-of-the-art facility called the Battle Back Centre. This centre is due to open in 2012 and will use sport and adventure activities to assist the recovery of wounded, injured and sick service personnel.

Amanda Prowse started writing Poppy Day in 2008 when her husband, Major Simeon Prowse MBE, was about to be deployed to Iraq. Encouraged to write by her best friend, TV presenter, Carol Vorderman, she describes her motivation for writing the book.

‘Not much has ever been written about what it’s like for the person who is left back at home – what it’s like for the wives and partners, and that’s one of the things I’ve tried to do in Poppy Day.’

Poppy Day officially launched on October 27 in time for Remembrance Day celebrations. Amanda has written other books, which are connected to Poppy Day. The first of these is due to be published early in 2012.

Dawn, from professional writing business, Dotting and Crossing Ltd, said, ‘My involvement was initially as a proof reader, but as my passion for the plight of heroine Poppy Day grew, so did my involvement and I became the editor of this lovely romantic story and worthy cause.’

Paul Leach, MD of Hertfordshire and Bedfordshire based Peachy Creative, which helped with the design and typography of the book, said, ‘Our talented creative director, David Metrovich, was the man for the job. He is an incredibly gifted designer. Peachy is a new agency but between us we have over 40 years of experience. A wonderful project like Poppy Day has been a great springboard for our business.’
