Wild things to do in Surrey this May
Saturday May 5, 10am-1pm
Calves Calling, Wisley Common, Woking
Meet some of Surrey Wildlife Trust’s beautiful newborn calves at their farm near Wisley with grazing manager, James Adler. On the way to the farm, see what the other cows are up to as they munch their way around the heath. No dogs! Call to book your place. Suggested donation: adults £2 and children £1.

Dawn Chorus Day and Breakfast, Wisley Common, Woking
Join a glorious early morning walk on International Dawn Chorus Day to enjoy the sights and sounds of Wisley Common. Learn how to identify different bird species by their call, sight and habitat, discover various habitats such as heathland and woodland, and compare the different species found in each. Stay for a warming cup of tea, coffee or hot chocolate and a pastry. Come warmly dressed and bring binoculars if you have them. Call to book your place. Suggested donation: adults £2, children £1. Walking the Wilds of Waverley, Royal Common, Milford
Mark National Walking Month by joining this walk of six-and-a-half miles, exploring the grasslands, woodland and heaths of Bagmoor, Royal and Elstead Commons and then on to the Thursley Common National Nature Reserve. Binoculars would be useful and dogs are welcome but be prepared to put them on a lead. Wear suitable walking footwear and bring a drink and snack. Call to book your place. Centenary Event: Our History, Nower Wood Educational Nature Reserve, Leatherhead
As part of the Royal Society of Wildlife Trusts’ centenary, come along to the open day at Nower Wood to celebrate the history of this beautiful nature reserve and education centre. Take part in activities and events that explore the ecology of the area and learn about the history of the ancient woodland. To mark the centenary, Surrey Wildlife Trust is also interested in hearing about your memories of their events and seeing any photos you may have.

From Ash to Yew: Sheepleas Trees, West Horsley
To celebrate this month’s Walk in the Woods Festival, join a leisurely two-mile stroll around Sheepleas looking at the various tree species found on this local nature reserve and Site of Special Scientific Interest in the Surrey Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty – from the ash tree with its pagan associations to the mythical yew and many others along the way. Suggested donation: adults £2, children £1.

Artists on the Common, Chobham Common, Chobham
Bring your sketchbooks and spend a few hours capturing the beauty, spirit and wildlife of this beautiful heathland reserve at Chobham. There will be a short walk onto site. In the unfortunate event of bad weather, this event will be cancelled. Suggested donation: adults £2, children £1.
