Why you should move to Pocklington

New life has been given to a pair of 19th century chapels which stand side by side and were the original gated entrance to Pocklington Cemetery. Some say they were designed and built by local architect and builder Thomas Grant.

Today however these characteristic old buildings have been given a new purpose by the Iconic Home Company.

In sharp contrast to the facades of intricate brickwork and stone detailing, is a striking and innovative, modern interior. But the location is also a crucial part of this successful redevelopment.

Pocklington is a classic English market town nestling at the foothills of the Yorkshire Wolds in the East Riding of Yorkshire. Situated 13 miles or east of York, its skyline is dominated by the 15th century church tower against a back drop of rolling hills and wooded copses. Quaint old houses embrace the market place with several unusually named streets which reflect its history from the Iron Age and onwards.

Burnby Hall gardens are home to the largest collection of hardy water lilies in Britain. The two lakes that contain the lilies are set in eight acres of beautiful gardens - including rock gardens, a natural shrubbery, formal beds, the Secret Garden and a Victorian Garden.

Pocklington canal which dates back to 1818, carries a national status as one of the top 10 places to see aquatic wildlife. Restoration of this notable inland waterway is on-going and recent lock gate replacement and renovation has enabled part of the canal from Pocklington to East Cottingworth, to become navigable once more.

Towpaths provide cycle, jogging and walking routes.

The Yorkshire Wolds are a series of gently undulating hills and valleys south of the North York Moors and east of the Vale of York. The geology is predominantly of chalk giving rise to an unspoilt landscape reminiscent of the South Downs. The hills meet the east coast at Flamborough and at the dramatic sea cliffs of Bempton.
