Lady Garden
May 21st 2012
It is impossible to conceal my displeasure. As far as I recall – and my memory has yet to fail me - Farthing Hall’s gardens have never been so disheveled. True, Rodgers, our Head Gardener, is approaching his autumn years, but I see no reason for that to affect his judgement. Or my forking larkspur.
May Day
May 7th 2012
Bank Holiday. Public Holiday. What ghastly, unimaginative descriptions of one of this country’s most traditional celebrations. I refer, of course, to May Day to which I have allotted sections (not within sight of Farthing Hall, might I add) of the grounds over to Maypole dancing, processions of flower girls and the voting of the May Queen. The latter I have already selected.
Polling Duties
April 23rd 2012
Since I first accompanied Papa on the hustings as a 10th birthday treat, I have been an active supporter of the political system. No doubt certain elements, however, will either fail to locate the polling station or have insufficient knowledge of issues to render a balanced view.
Classic Clothes in the Community
April 10th 2012
Despite my many obligations, I have this week not only found time to launch my latest charity initiative, but also enrolled a respectable woman from the village willing to sift through the second hand donations before their onward journey to needy families. Probably in the North.
Easter Treats
April 2nd 2012
My mission to distribute Easter eggs to those unfortunate children whose parents lack correct financial planning is well underway. Such a pity the local Headmistress spurned my suggestion of handmade confectionary. Indeed her negative and, frankly, confrontational response was staggeringly incomprehensible. I trust such a deficiency of politeness will not filter down to her charges.
Spring Cleaning
March 19th 2012
I have summoned the staff and conveyed my detailed instructions for Farthing Hall’s annual spring clean. Despite a lack of verbal acquiescence, I expect everyone to adhere to my standards. All lapses will, of course, be noted on staff records.
Back at the Helm
February 29th 2012
With such inferior leadership the decline of the Women’s Guild was somewhat inevitable. However, I am surely best qualified to resurrect the role and in so doing will ensure the group’s profile is rekindled accordingly. What a joy to be back at the helm.
The Servicing of my Bentley
February 15th 2012
Our vintage vehicles have, up to now, been aptly serviced by our London dealer. Yet with the faltering economy – a sentiment I recently discerned whilst chairing a discussion group – I feel obligated to bolster the workmanship of my local automotive dealer.
The Capital Calls
February 1st 2012
There is much preparation to which I need attend what with an imminent trip to London, culminating in an evening at The Royal Opera House. Of course, such a theatrical destination warrants the utmost attention to sartorial elegance. Court shoes and pearls are a necessity.
Water Closet Seepage
January 16th 2012
The Master’s overflow requires attention. Such a decline – which is doubtless inevitable with age - carries a downside in terms of the inevitable influx of tradesmen. Steps have been taken, however, to deter the soiling of my flagstones.
