As soon as Boxing Day dawns, thoughts turn to New Years Eve and how best to mark the New Year. Follow in the footsteps of generations of Northumbrians past and head to Allendale. Located within easy reach of Hexham and Carlisle, this former mining town plays host to a very special New Years tradition which dates back to 1858. 45 villagers in fancy dress process through the town carrying lit tar barrels which are used to light a ceremonial bonfire in the town square. Join in with a chorus of Be damned to he who throws last as the barrels are thrown onto the bonfire. The ceremony was a regional finalist of the 2011 Enjoy England, Where Else But England Awards so its well worth visiting if you spend New Year in Northumberland. The ceremony doesnt get underway until just before midnight so enjoy a few drinks in the local and soak up the atmosphere during the evening.
While many people will see in the New Year with a spectacular fireworks display, who needs fireworks when you can enjoy natures own light display? Not far from the Scottish border, Kielder Observatory hosts New Years Eve; guests are taught to use the telescopes and then stare skywards searching for planets and distant galaxies. Enjoy a warming glass of mulled wine and a slice of cake to keep out the December cold while you put your new skills into action. Celebrate the chime of midnight with a glass of champagne and release lanterns into Kielder Forest to enjoy a stunning display with your fellow stargazers.
