Yorkshire artist, Hannah Jayne Lewin created an eye-catching balloon-shaped dog sculpture for The Big Dog Art Trail which took place this summer in Swindon. Her beautiful Swindog, Adventure Hound, will feature in an online auction on September 19 to raise money for children’s charity, Julia’s House.

We caught up with her to find out more:

Tell us about your work I’m a freelance illustrator working on projects across a variety of areas including children’s publishing, licensing, murals and sculpture trails.

Best bit about your job?

Being creative everyday and bringing joy to people through my artwork.

Career highlights so far?

I’ve loved illustrating a number of picture books with Scholastic and also really enjoyed being involved in numerous art trails all over the UK.

How long have you lived in Yorkshire?

I was born in Yorkshire and have lived here my whole life.

What do you love about living here ?

I work from home and I’m blessed with a lovely view overlooking farmland and fields. There’s also a reservoir nearby which is nice to have a wander around when I need a break from work.

How did you get involved with the Big Dog Art Trail?

I had seen a few sculpture trails and always thought they would be a fun project to be involved in. When I saw The Big Dog Art Trail was looking for artists to decorate their sculptures I submitted a couple of designs. I was delighted that one of my designs, 'Adventure Hound’ was selected to be part of the trail.

What inspired your design and the name of your Swindog sculpture - Adventure Hound?

I was inspired by Sir David Hempleman-Adams, an adventurer who was born in Swindon. My design celebrates his many achievements, including climbing the highest peaks in all seven continents, and being the first person to fly to the North Pole in a balloon. There are a few fun animal additions too and if you look closely you may even spot Santa zooming past on his sleigh!

Now that the trail has finished, what will happen to Adventure Hound?

My painted balloon dog sculpture will be auctioned to raise money for Julia’s House, a charity  that provides care and support for seriously ill local children and their families.

What’s in the pipeline for you now?

I am due to start a mural painting project soon and have been working on another top secret project too! I have also just launched my own shop selling fun and bright greetings cards that appeal to both the young and young at heart.

Adventure Hound will feature in The Big Dog Art Trail’s Online Auction on 19th September 19. You can bid online now and browse all the sculptures here.
