A promising future for Cornwall

Investors continued confidence in the tourism industry
Tourism is a billion pound industry in Cornwall, making up almost a quarter of the county’s economy. Over 4 million people a year visit the area, attracted by the beautiful beaches, amazing surf, stunning countryside and temperate climate.
January and February’s bad weather was a slight setback, and with the railway line at Dawlish being damaged it was feared that tourism would suffer. Nevertheless, Malcolm Bell, head of VisitCornwall, stated that 94% of visitors travel by road and air so are not affected.
Repairs to the railway line are well underway and should be completed by the beginning of the Easter holidays, minimising disruption to the county’s tourism industry during one of its peak times.
Despite the challenges, there is a light at the end of the tunnel for Cornish tourism. Experts give 3-1 odds that temperatures will soar to record highs this summer, thanks to the Pacific Ocean’s El Niño phenomenon. The tropical temperatures will see visitors flocking to Cornwall’s outstanding selection of award-winning beaches to enjoy a refreshing dip as respite from the heat.
What’s more, there are big plans to boost cultural tourism and to unite businesses and attractions. A £340,031 award from Arts Council England will be used to raise awareness of Cornish arts and culture and encourage even more visitors to make the most of what’s on offer. Malcolm Bell said “Tourism and culture are strong partners with significant potential to develop a powerful collaboration between the sectors to improve and broaden the appeal of Cornwall to a wider range of visitors, especially out of the main holiday season.”
Individual businesses, too, are investing in the county’s future. James Morris, Managing Director of Holidaycottages.co.uk says: “Our Cornish cottages represent over a third of our UK wide portfolio of in excess of 1,800 properties. Our customers took over 13,000 holidays in Cornwall in 2013 and figures look promising for the future.
