We look at an east Herts service that collects and sells unwanted furniture headed for landfill to help households, cut waste and support the local economy

Furniture Re-use Service was set up in 2012 by the Community Voluntary Services for the Broxbourne and East Herts districts. With a tag line of ‘Finding furniture a new home’, its aim is to provide quality used furniture and white goods to people in the area and help those who are on low incomes to furnish their homes affordably. Money generated by the sale of furniture stays in the community and therefore also benefits the local economy. And by reusing unwanted items in this way the service is also environmentally friendly as it reduces waste.

The service supports referrals from local Housing Associations and has worked with clients from many voluntary groups including East Herts Citizens Advice Service, Ware Charities, Herts Young Homeless and Hertsavers Credit Union. It has also provided office furniture to Hertfordshire charities including The Gifted, Cheshunt Extended Services and Wormley and Turnford Big Local. Deliveries are made at no extra cost to the customer.

The charity has many volunteering opportunities for those who wish to help. These include collecting and delivering items in the local area (be aware many items are heavy and sometimes have to be carried up stairs, so if you wish to volunteer for the collection and delivery team you must to be fit), general administration, office duties, selling furniture and helping to organise the charity’s warehouse. There is a particular need of people who can volunteer on weekdays.

Volunteering is not the only way to support the work. People can donate suitable items (these are collected free of charge) and also make a purchase from the charity. All items are on display at the service’s warehouse in Ware, which is open to visitors by appointment.

At the moment the charity requires donations of beds, wardrobes, chests of drawers, sofas, chairs, tables and white goods in resalable condition. Some items may not be suitable for collection based on condition or because there is already surplus stock or limited space for storage. So don’t be offended if the team is unable to take your items.
