Choral carol services and grand instrumental performances, with the backdrop of some of the Cotswolds most picturesque locations, are perfect ways to embrace the festivities. We pick some of the best carol services and concerts to enjoy in the region

Charlecote Park Christmas House

When: Saturday, December 1 – Sunday, December 23 (every Saturday and Sunday, 11:00 – 15:30)

Marking the Christmas season, Charlecote Park will be taking visitors back in time to December 1918 – the first peace-time Christmas in four years. Visitors will be able to view the House as it was 100 years ago, decked out with Christmas spirit and enjoy charming choral song. The event itself is free, but pre-booking is essential and normal ticket prices apply for the venue.

For families, Father Christmas will be accepting visitors at Charlecote House on November 30 as well as various dates throughout December. This event costs £6 and booking is essential (some days are already sold out). Alternatively, there is the chance to have breakfast with him every Saturday, from December 1 – 22 (9:30 – 10:30). This event costs £8.50 for adults and £10.50 for children (the cost includes tea or coffee, breakfast and a gift for children) and booking is essential.


Gloucester Cathedral Carol Concerts

Where: Gloucester Cathedral, 12 College Green, Gloucester

Gloucester Cathedral will be hosting plenty of carol concerts throughout the festive period, many in aid of charity. Here are several of the events, although more can be found on Gloucester Cathedral’s website.

There will be a Meningitis Now Christmas Celebration Concert on Thursday, December 13 at 7:30pm, tickets cost £10 (Nave) or £5 (side aisle). Tickets can be purchased here or by calling 0345 120 4530. The Ecclesiastical Insurance Christmas Carol Celebration will be taking place on Tuesday, December 20 at 7:30pm. Tickets cost £4 and are available at the door or in the Cathedral’s gift shop. St Cecilia Singers Christmas Concert will be on Saturday December 22, from 7pm. Tickets are £15, or free for under 18s, and can be purchased here, by calling 01452 396572 or are available on the door. The “Spirit of Christmas” Concert on Tuesday November 27, at 7:30, will be in aid of Muscular Dystrophy UK. Tickets are £20 (VIP), £10 (adult) or £5 (children) and can be booked here or by visiting the Gloucester Tourist Information Centre or calling on 01452 396572.

Gloucester Cathedral will also be celebrating the 40th anniversary of the publication of Raymond Briggs’ original picture book The Snowman. Three performances of the animated film – with live orchestra – will take place at 1pm, 3pm and 7pm on Friday, December 14. Promising to be a night celebrating modern carols, this concert will feature the works of John Rutter, Chris Williams, Leonard Salzedo, Gordon Jacob and Benjamin Britten. Performing alongside the Tewkesbury Choral Society will be the Regency Brass Ensemble and David Whitehead on organ and piano. These beautiful performances will all take place in the historic Tewkesbury Abbey.

Warwick Arts Centre

For an alternative Christmas Concert, Warwick Arts Centre is hosting The University of Warwick Symphony Orchestra, performing highlights of Handel’s Messiah and Mussorgsky’s Pictures at an Exhibition, arranged for orchestra by Ravel. These powerful pieces will be performed in Butterworth Hall, a historic venue that had a multi-million pound redevelopment in 2009.

Tickets cost £10 or £8 for concessions.


Carols From Around The World, St Giles Church in Goodrich

Where: Goodrich Primary School, Goodrich, Ross-on-Wye

Join The Roaring Megs and Goodrich Primary School in a celebration of carols from across the world. Proceeds from the bar and raffle will go to charities Acorns and Megan Baker House.

Stroud Choral Society’s Christmas Celebration

When: Friday December 7

Where: St George’s Church, Church Street, Nailsworth

This celebration will comprise of carols, festive songs and readings from the Stroud Choral Society.

Evening Christmas Carols by Steam Train

When: Saturday December 8, 2018 – 7pm

Where: Departing from the Railway Station, Toddington

For an evening of festive excitement, in aid of the Royal National Lifeboat Institution, the Gloucestershire Warwickshire Steam Railway (GWSR) will give you a seasonal experience to remember. Beginning at Toddington station, the train will take passengers to Winchcombe Station, where there will be a magical carol service under the Christmas lights.

Tickets cost £10 for adults or £5 for children (5-12 years)


Tewkesbury Town Band’s Christmas Concert

When: 7:30pm, Saturday December 8 and 3.30pm, Sunday December 9

Where: The Roses Theatre, Sun Street, Tewkesbury

The hugely popular Tewkesbury Town Band will be holding their annual Christmas concert in The Roses Theatre. A night filled with festive song, the Saturday concert will feature the School Choir, whilst the Sunday performance will feature Alderman Knight School Choir.

A Christmas Concert at Malvern Theatres

Join the Choristers of Gloucester Cathedral and Orchestra of the Swan in a traditional choral concert, featuring classic carols and works by Handel, Rutter and Britten. Conducted by Adrian Partington, this will be a night of beautiful song to get you in the festive spirit.

Tickets cost between £21.28 and £28 (including a 12% booking fee).


Charity Christmas Concert and Dinner, Barnsley House

A luxurious night of festive song and culinary delights will begin with a tipple and canapés in Barnsley House, before a short candlelit walk to St. Mary’s Church. Here there will be an alternative carol service, with readings by professional actors and carols from the Cotswold Male Voice Choir. The night will end back at Barnsley House, where a sumptuous three-course meal will be served.

The price of this seasonal celebration is £99 per ticket, which includes a donation to charity; or overnight stays will cost £397 (this includes two tickets and breakfast).


Christmas Carols in Montpellier Gardens

When: 5pm, Friday December 14

Where: Montpellier Gardens, Cheltenham

Hosted by the Friends of Montpellier Bandstand and Gardens, Christmas Carols in Montpellier Gardens will encourage crowds to wrap up warm and sing-a-long to a collection of traditional and modern carols.

Performers include the Ukeholics Ukelele Band and Innsworth Military Wives Choir.

The evening is free with donations to charity welcome.


Berkeley Castle Christmas Concert

When: 6pm, Sunday December 16 (reception from 5pm)

This celebration will begin with a reception including wine and festive treats, followed by the concert. Performed by Orchestra Pro Anima (comprised of members of the English String Orchestra), the evening will include pieces by Bach, Mozart, Mendelssohn, Anderson, Telemann, Corelli and Bizet. This will be the 17th year of the concert at Berkeley Castle, with its setting adding to the beauty and memorable nature of the night.

The cost of this celebratory evening is £42, which includes the reception with its festive fare.
