While the tourists are away the seagulls are at play
At the time of writing it has been 12 weeks since my last visit to the beach.
I am luckier than most. If I crane my neck out of our bathroom window on a really clear day, I can see the Atlantic Ocean shimmering in the distance. And it’s not all bad, the seagulls are still visiting. No doubt wondering where the annual feast that comes with the seasonal wave of tourists has gone. I’m told they can live for up to 15 years, so they will have their favourite eateries, as much as visitors: chips on the harbour in St Ives, pasties from Philps in Hayle and hedgehog ice cream at Chapel Porth...even a spot of fresh fish straight off the boat in Newlyn. The food in Cornwall is as big an attraction as the beaches: seasonality, freshness, sustainability, food miles have been on Cornwall’s menus for many years. And every year the food seems to get better. New and existing eateries serving up exceptional plates of food.
But all this is gone. Overnight. And Cornwall’s one-off eateries are incredibly vulnerable. They don’t have the back-up that comes from being part of a global conglomerate with eye watering bank balances. What makes Cornwall’s food industry so special, could be its undoing.
So, as I continue to create interesting dishes from the mystery tins at the back of my cupboard, I am creating a bucket list of foodie experiences that I will be booking myself on to as soon as the grand reopenings.
And if the lockdown continues, maybe our food culture will have to change with it – at least for a while. I’d love to see Paul Ainsworth at No.6 offering a delivery or Ben Tunnicliffe opening a take-away in Newlyn. And who wouldn’t order a carry-out Lemon Sole Veronique for two from Rick Stein’s Seafood restaurant?
And don’t worry too much about the seagulls. Somehow they all seem to have Cornwall Council’s weekly bin collection rota.
