Fish and chip shops in Dorset you need to try

When Friday night arrives you can’t beat a traditional fish supper from the local chippy. With some help from our readers and in no particular order, we pick eight great ‘plaices’ for fish and chips in Dorset.
With shops in both West Street and King Street, Longs have a chippy empire in Bridport. Both shops serve anything from BBQ ribs and pizzas, to garlic prawns and fish stew, but the real star of the show here is the fish and chips. Whether you decide to dine in or take out you can expect crispy batter and proper chippy chips best served with a side of mushy peas.
This family-run business has been going for thirty years so you're in safe and knowledgeable hands when it comes to your Friday fish supper. The chips here are double-cooked and the fish is lightly coated in Chez Fred's very own mouth-watering batter recipe - even the sauces and mushy peas are homemade. Food is freshly cooked to order so be prepared to queue but it's certainly worth the wait.
Herbies is just a few steps away from the sea; that means fish is fresh and local. It's cooked to perfection and served with a generous portion of chips on the side and can be made with or without batter (we always opt for the version with extra calories of course). Enjoy yours with a dose of Vitamin Sea on Lyme Regis beach.
You'll find Chesil Chippie just a fossil's throw away from Chesil Beach and it's the perfect spot to get your fingers salty while eating our national dish next to the sea. Cod, haddock, squid, hake, salt and vinegar or chips without - whatever your preference, there's plenty on the menu to sate the appetite, but no visit is complete without trying the famous pea bomb fritters. They also ensure that their menus are as sustainable as possible, with no palm oil used.
They certainly don't scrimp on quality at Fish 'n' Fritz. The fish is lightly coated in a secret recipe batter and there's extra chips for free if you manage to devour the hearty portion in front of you. Chippy teas can be eaten in the restaurant or taken away. We like to eat ours the Dorset way (whilst sitting on a beach). Just watch out for those seagulls…
If you like a fish supper with sea view to match we know just the place to go. Lakeside in Poole has spectacular views over Holes Bay and the restaurant is upmarket without losing the authenticity of a traditional chippy tea. With previous accolades of 'Dorset's best fish and chip shop' under its belt, Lakeside is an ideal spot to celebrate the weekend with a Friday night treat.

If you're after a no-frills, straight-to-the-point, traditional fish supper then you're in the right place. Follow the salt and vinegar scent through Sherborne and you'll soon stumble upon the Abbey Friar. Portions here are not for the faint-hearted so make sure you're wearing your stretchy trousers - you won't regret it.
Owners John and Oliver practically live and breathe fish and chips and they're both advocates of great quality, sustainably sourced ingredients. The fish is local and the chips are homemade from British-grown potatoes. The motto of Fish Plaice is 'Making fish and chips batter' and we'd struggle to disagree.
Nestled in Fordington, Dorchester, lies a tasty hidden gem. Callaway's Fish and Chips is a firm favourite with locals and tourists alike. They are no strangers to the Fry Magazine Top 50, featuring in 2020 and 2021. Having recently revamped their equipment and store, they are ready and raring to taking your order.
