From London to Tokyo, supper clubs and pop-ups now make for vibrant alternatives to restaurants. They are not just the preserve of the big cities though. Here’s a few to check out in Surrey...
Abinger Hammer Cookery School
The Abinger Hammer Cookery School is set to launch some intriguing new supper clubs this year, with Après Ski Fondue and Italian Supper Club pencilled in on the menu. Plans are still being worked through but expect the clubs to cost around £35 per head, depending on the ingredients.

Ashtead Secret Supper Club
Inspired by Come Dine With Me (but “without the sarcastic voice-over”), one Ashtead couple launched their own club in 2013. An intimate affair for usually around four to eight guests (although it can be as many as the host can accommodate month-to-month), the cuisine has covered everything from French to Egyptian and is normally just a cost-covering £15.

Dining at Down Hall
Epsom-based chef Laura Scott will be kicking off a new series of unique supper clubs hosted in Down Hall, Epsom. Tucked away behind rambling old brick walls, Down Hall is a grade II listed Georgian house designed and built for the former Epsom Derby trainer and winning jockey John Forth in 1810. Down Hall supper club guests will be treated to some exquisite cuisine while at the same time being inspired by the historic surroundings and period features.

This one has proved so popular since Surrey Life last reviewed it a year or so ago, that your name’s got to be on the list almost before the dates are actually announced. Found down some winding country lanes near Woking, the food is spectacularly different...

Ham House Supper Club
With over 400 years of history on view, the supper club at the National Trust’s Ham House in Richmond is something pretty special. Their next event, taking place in their Orangery café on Saturday June 13, will feature three-courses, a welcome drink and a talk or tour by a member of the NT team. The suppers are based around the season and, depending on time of year, they aim to use as much produce from the property’s 17th century walled kitchen garden as possible. Tickets: £40.

Maxwell McKenzie, Various
Originally making his name in the Reigate area as a bit of a pop-up king, Maxwell McKenzie previously worked with the likes of Marcus Wareing at The Berkeley Hotel and Fergus Henderson at St John Hotel Soho. These days, you’ll find this highly regarded chef making regular appearances at The Vineking wine merchant in Reigate and Weybridge; the RT Gallery in Merstham; and The Tea House in Reigate. Prices vary.

Surrey Spice, Guildford
Fresh on the local dining scene, Surrey Spice claims to be our county’s first Indian fine dining supper club. Having grown up in India, owner Mandira Sarkar moved to the UK in 1998 before taking a break from ‘work’ last year to concentrate on her dream: cookery classes and a food blog. Last Christmas, she was invited by the Taj group of hotels (one of India’s leading luxury hotel groups) to do a culinary trail in India, cooking with some of India’s top chefs, which led to the idea of a supper club back home. Each of Mandira’s events are differently themed – around seasons, festivals or regions – and held in the privacy of a Guildford home. Spaces are limited to 12 per session and cost £35.
