As restaurants, pubs and cafes remain closed many of them have adapted and now deliver to your door. Here are some of our favourites.
Wood Fire Smoke
This popular pizza joint in Wilmslow hit all the right notes when it first opened in 2017. Diners would perch on bar stools to watch piping hot pizzas cooking in the stone baked oven or huddle around industrial-style tables, grazing on olives, tearing off the crusts to dunk in basil aioli, and quaffing BYOB plonk. And whilst its fun-time atmosphere is still out of reach, their pizzas and salads are still available for delivery and collection to satisfy your cravings for all things Italian. woodfiresmokepizza.com/takeaway.
The Makers Market
A market consortium defined by its artisanal and craft-led sellers, the Makers Market sets up shop across a handful of Cheshire’s towns on rotation, drawing hungry folk from all over the county. Harnessing the plucky local spirit that’s swelled in recent months following the arrival of COVID-19, the creators have launched its next chapter: an online shop in lieu of actual market day, handpicking some of the north west’s best produce. Street food hits include cinnamon rolls from the Hot Stuffed Bread Company; genuine home-cooked samosas, curries and daals from Perfect Samosa; fancy cakes and bakes from Sunflower Kitchen; coffee beans from sustainable roaster Mug Run Coffee Roasting; and cocktail infusions from SJ-N Drinks. Check the website for postcode delivery days. Delivery is £5 for a £20-£50 order; free delivery for orders over £80. themakersmarketshop.co.uk/collections/food.
Expectations were sky-high when this swish Indian restaurant opened in Hale at the tail-end of 2019. And rave reviews for its authentic and inventive cooking followed, in praise of a menu (and a dining experience) that were raising the game in the area’s foodie scene. For lockdown, it’s figured out how to steer its way through the pandemic with a Gupshup at Home takeaway menu that’s undoubtedly a step up from your average curry house. Go for the Goan prawn and mop it all up with a garlic naan. gupshup.co.uk.

Usually firing up the grills at the Picturedrome, Mackie Mayor and Altrincham Market with juicy steaks and drool-worthy burgers, Tender Cow is navigating quarantine life with its DIY lockdown kits that have gone down a storm with its regulars, whether you’re in the mood for melt-in-the-mouth hunks of flat iron with chimichurri, or braised short rib sets with jalapeno pesto. Throw in an order of their salty chips, too. Collection is free from Altrincham Market with delivery dependent on location. tendercow.co.uk.
If you’re pining for that villa in Puglia you’ve just missed out on, of sun-bleached towns, evening sea dips, and the region’s outstanding natural larder, order a batch of bona fide creamy burrata, fresh squid ink taglioni and rich tapenade to smear over focaccia from this Italian deli in Wilmslow. It might not replace your trip, but it will summon a grin as wide as Italy’s culinary repertoire.
On any ‘normal’ evening, this Alderley Edge restaurant dedicated to Middle Eastern cuisine is packed to the rafters with diners nibbling chargrilled meats and squeaky halloumi. But you can still feast on its acclaimed dishes from the comfort of your own home with its delivery service. And you can take our word for it – standards are just as high as when it earned its inclusion in last year’s Good Food Guide. yararestaurant.co.uk
