Dartmouth Food Festival

The annual Dartmouth Food Festival was held last weekend and Mitch Tonks, award winning food writer, restaurateur and fishmonger comments on how much of a success it has become.
Over the years Dartmouth Food Festival has become a major food event in the South West, and this year over 20,000 visitors came to the beautiful maritime town to enjoy a weekend of delicious food and drink. The public were treated to well over a hundred stalls of local food businesses selling their fresh produce, everything from meat and fish to jams and chutneys. The produce was so popular in fact that many exhibitors actually sold out, including The Blueberry Brothers, Sharpham Wine & Cheese, Luscombe Drinks, Portlebay Popcorn and Favis of Salcombe, whose 1.5 tonnes of crab were devoured. The festival showed off the town in all of its glory. Stalls lined the South Embankment and the Old Market Square, demonstrations and workshops were held in the Royal Avenue Gardens, and tastings and dinners were available in the town’s restaurants, delis and cafés.
Over the three day event a record number of people turned up to the free Eat Your Own Words sessions where food and wine experts discussed a range of topics. Highlights included Henry Dimbleby, co-founder of Leon, in conversation with BBC1’s ‘Saturday Kitchen’ regular wine expert, Susy Atkins. The Glazebrook House Hotel’s executive head chef and former MasterChef The Professionals quarter finalist, Ben Palmer drew in large crowds for his cookery demonstration, as did James Ramsden and Diana Henry. The hands-on cookery workshops and wine seminars were also a great success.
This year the festival said a sad farewell to Festival director of seven years, David Jones. Dartmouth’s Mayor, Robert Lyon said “I think everything done in Dartmouth is always wonderful. Dartmouth Food Festival helps bring people to the town, which is great. Having known David for quite a long time I know how hard he’s worked to make the festival the great success it is and I understand how much work goes into organising an event such as this. I’d like to personally thank David and his wife Holly for all their hard work.”
