Unless you’ve been hit by a mealtime power cut it’s unlikely you’ve ever had a three-course dinner in total darkness.

But that’s the experience being offered at an unusual fundraising event in Devon.

Diners at Topsham’s Salutation Inn will be served their meal in a pitch black room – served by waitresses who are visually impaired or completely blind and other staff wearing military-issue night-vision goggles.

Diners are encouraged to re-evaluate the notions of taste and smell through this gastronomic experience.

The Dining in the Dark dinners on 11, 12 and 13 November will raise awareness of visual impairment and generate funds for Exeter-based WESC Foundation.

WESC Foundation supports visually impaired learners, many of whom also have complex needs, from across the South West as well as providing outreach services to schools and colleges.

A similar event happened in May when diners including the then Lord Mayor of Exeter Cllr Rachel Lyons enjoyed a three-course menu specially created by Chef Director of the Salutation Inn, Tom Williams-Hawkes, along with some perfectly matched wines courtesy of Bibendum Wines.

Cllr Lyons said: “The whole event brought it home to me how visually impaired people have to cope with every-day living.”

WESC Foundation Fundraising Manager Jon Duckham says: “Spaces on this unique gourmet experience are filling up fast, so if you would like to join us please do get in touch as soon as possible to reserve your space.”
