This popular country pub couldn’t be in a more picturesque location. Situated on the Llangollen Canal in the rural village of Wrenbury, The Dusty Miller is an ideal destination for those seeking pub classics done well, and is also an excellent pit-stop for walkers and cyclists. Originally a corn mill, the period building dates to the mid-eighteenth century and despite being converted in the mid 1970s, a lot of the original features still remain.

For starters, my partner and I decided to share a selection of nibbles. Priced individually at £3 or four for £10, we opted for the houmous and pitta bread, homemade focaccia, warm spicy chorizo and mini chicken kievs with spicy mayonnaise. Served on a wooden platter, the portions were a healthy size and would be ideal if you were after a light bite with a few drinks. The focaccia was a standout dish, still piping hot from the oven and tasting heavenly with balsamic vinegar and olive oil. My partner had ordered the classic Dusty steak burger (£10) for his main, a juicy burger served on a toasted bun with French fries, and I opted for the Dusty hand crafted puff pie. With five filling options to choose from, I selected Welsh black beef and Old Tom ale (£14), and the deliciously flaky outer crust fell away to reveal super tender beef in rich gravy. Served with a crispy hand cut chips, a selection of fresh vegetables and jug of ‘proper gravy’ – it was one of the best pies I have had in a long time. Unfortunately we were both too full to attempt a dessert (my gluttony almost got the better of me after being tempted by the Dusty sticky toffee pudding) and opted for a sunny canal walk instead. An afternoon in the country well spent.
