Our mystery reviewer drops in on the Melford Valley Tandoori

Long Melford has its fair share of good places to eat doesn’t it?

Yes, and it covers most bases from high end cuisine at Scutchers and the Black Lion to traditional, good value pub fare. It also has two Indian restaurants and not many villages can offer that.

So tough decision then?

Well, we walked past one curry house on the way to our chosen destination The Melford Valley Tandoori. Both are welcoming though the weekend night we dropped in the Melford Valley seemed busier.

Good food?

Good variety of dishes and reasonable prices. They say the other Indian, Caf Marsala, further along Hall Street is a little more expensive though perhaps we should investigate.

Thumbs up for all dishes - though my Bengal dish came with what looked like cheese drizzled over the top – odd for a curry but perhaps I should have read the small print. Excellent Chicken Vindaloo apparently was one view from across the table and between mouthfuls.

Also nice and reasonably priced house red.

….and the service?

Very friendly. One waiter wanted to know where we had come from (from Suffolk and Essex as it happens) and how we had heard of the restaurant (word of mouth recommendations). That said it was lucky we were meeting old friends and planned a long evening of food, drink and conversation. If we had been eating and then going on somewhere the hour and a half wait for our food would have been annoying. While we waited we were often asked whether we wanted more drinks so we knew the drill!

What was the bill?

Four main courses, several side orders, drinks and a tip made our bill for four come in at 100.

Would you recommend?

Yes, but there is competition in the area – Ballingdon Valley in Sudbury is excellent and there is also an Indian option in Lavenham worth trying.
