VENUE
Who goes here? Premiership footballers, soap stars, ladies from farther afield wanting to rub shoulders with Cheshire celebs, plus the great and the good residents of Alderley Edge, Prestbury and Wilmslow love this place. The Bubble Bar is a bit of an institution and locals took it to their hearts when it opened several years ago. It’s an unusual quirky bar and restaurant in a vaguely retro style, offering good food, drinks and atmosphere at any time of day. There are low sofas for casual dining and discreet booth areas near the back of the restaurant.
MENU
It manages to offer down to earth hearty pub style food and beer, alongside that fizzy stuff so closely associated with the Golden Triangle, and dishes with a fine dining style. I can vouch for the chicken satay skewers (£7 as a small plate or starter) the Cajun chicken burger (£12 including sweet potato fries) and goats’ cheese and walnut salad (£8). My friend - blessed with a delicate appetite - could only manage smoked salmon to start (£7) followed by the Great North’s cheese and onion pie (£12). All our food, as on several previous visits, was good. But there’s plenty of competition from neighbouring eateries on this stretch, so it has to be. The drinks menu is very tempting: should we have a cocktail or share a bottle of Dom Perignon Rose (£320) or a more modest bottle of Veuve Clicquot Yellow Label,Brut (£55). Sadly, neither of us has a footballer’s income and our cars were parked nearby so it was one glass each of Giddy Goose Sauvignon Blanc (£6.50 for 175 ml).
SERVICE
Swift and efficient, which was needed as we were on a tight schedule and needed to be back home before 10pm. But I hear The Bubble Room is open until pretty late, with live music for diners who wish to sing along in jolly fashion or dance on the tables.
COST
For two of us enjoying two courses (portions are decent), sparkling water, coffee, one glass of vino each, the bill came to £69.
