Venue: Family-run Sri Lankan restaurant on the main A6 just south of Stockport town centre.

Menu: Big choice of curries, biryani, lampris (a Sri Lankan-Dutch burger), other Sri Lankan specialities and mega-hot ‘devil’ dishes. Promisingly, everything on the menu can be done as hot, or not, as you prefer. We loved starters of spicy fish cutlets (£4.45) with minty and chili-hot chutneys, and chicken roll (£4.95) - a deep fried croquette of curried chicken. A main of chicken badum (£8.90) with egg fried rice was a dry, subtly spicy mix of chicken and seared peppers, onions and tomatoes. Chicken biryani (£9.95) was dark and deeply flavourful. Pud of wattalapam (£4.95) was an intriguing spicy chunk of sweetness with a moussey texture and delicious! Wine list is very limited, but the Sri Lankan Lion beer is recommended.

Decor and ambience: Black and gold-decked airy room with large windows onto the busy main road.

Service: Very friendly, efficient.

Cost: Three courses for two: under £70.
