Venue

Located in the old Ego premises, Silk Rd is a stylish new restaurant which infuses into its food, drink and décor the flavours found along the ancient routes from East China through to the Mediterranean Sea. Founded by Chris Williams and Javier Mellado, the duo wanted to share their passion of fresh food and love of travel with diners.

Menu

The menu is varied and is sure to please even the fussiest of diners. They recommend two to three small plates each, which are listed under various headings: fish, garden, curries, nibbles, meat and salads. My partner and I ordered six dishes between us. The portion sizes are generous, especially if you opt for the chicken pad Thai (£7) and chicken Colombo tamarind curry (£7.50). Both dishes burst with flavour, the curry not overtly spicy but with enough kick to leave a tickle on your tongue. Next we sampled the Laos money bags (£4.50), joyful parcels of filo pastry filled with succulent minced pork and vegetables, and chorizo frito (£5.50) – melt in your mouth slices of the Spanish sausage. The Iberican ham croquettes (£5) were delicious and my partner savoured his Malaysian steak (£8.50), a perfectly pink 4oz fillet with rich flavours.

Service

Friendly but could be more attentive

Cost

The above with a pint of beer and a glass of coke came to £52.35
