Just 15 minutes from Stansted and with seven en suite bedrooms, The Windmill Inn is ideal if you have an early flight to catch, writes Stephanie Mackentyre. I visited at lunchtime and chose the hunters chicken, although the steak and ale pie, the mixed grill and stuffed red peppers all sounded good too. After a short wait a generous portion of chicken breast with barbecue sauce, grilled salted bacon and melted cheese arrived, with chunky chips and fresh, crisp salad leaves. There are no starters on the lunchtime menu, which was disappointing, although having eaten the dish I concluded I would have struggled to eat two courses. Hence no dessert for me on this occasion although the selection of ice creams from Salcombe Dairy sounded interesting with stem ginger, honeycomb and raspberry just three of the flavours to choose from. This traditional Essex inn with its intimate surroundings also offers a live music night each month. On Friday, June 19, pop along to enjoy the sounds of a Cockney singing duo.

What did you choose? Ham, egg and jacket potato, rather than chips. There was so much ham on the plate, I had to send some back.

How did you find The Windmill? The day I opened my office was the day the landlords moved in so I decided to pop along.

Rate the value for moneySometimes a little expensive, although always very nice.

What did you enjoy most? The warm welcome
