Top spots for a meal for two in Norfolk
Life is slowly getting back to normal - no more home schooling (for now, anyway!), many of us are back to a more familiar work routine and everyone is getting used to the new ‘going out’.
However, I feel like I need a bit of a frivolous reward for all my responsible adulting, who’s with me? Whether you’re looking for a romantic dine or a catch up with a friend, here are my top ten places to grab a table for two!
Spice up your life
Dhaba at Fifteen, Norwich
Take a food journey through India at possibly the best Indian restaurant I’ve eaten in. Don’t just trust me – the reviews are glowing and that’s all down to executive chef Anwar Miah and his amazing street food recipes from across the continent. Fresh and tasty ingredients, beautifully presented and not an artificial colouring or stabiliser in sight. That includes alcohol - yes, this is a booze-free zone!

Room with a view
White Horse, Brancaster Staithe
The sun-soaked conservatory restaurant and terrace have spectacular views of the tidal marshes across to Scolt Head Island. One of my favourite places on the coast to eat seafood – the lobster pots and oyster beds are literally a stone’s throw away and produce is delivered fresh by the local fishermen. The rooms are pretty gorgeous too, if you fancy making a night of it!

Riverside romance
The Swan Inn, Horning
Dating back to 1696 and the setting for two of Swallows and Amazons author Arthur Ransom’s children’s books, the Swan Inn is bursting with history and character. With its wooden beams and cosy snugs, it’s easy to find a bit of privacy and that’s before Covid-19 regulations. If the September sun is shining, take a table on the bank of the River Bure and watch the boats cruise by as you tuck into their hearty menu of pub classics.

River Green Café, Trowse
In need of a veggie injection to boost your immune system? The River Green Café is perched on the edge of Trowse village green and is the perfect antidote to city living. The decor might be simple but the plant-based menu is an explosion of creativity. If you fancy expanding your vegan palate further, head chef Chris Avey runs a range of workshops and courses.

Going to the Greek
The Constantia Cottage, East Runton
Missing your European jaunt this summer? This just might make up for it. This fabulous taverna in East Runton has been serving authentic Greek food for 37 years and – Norfolk pub quiz fact – owner Panayis Yiasimi is the father of well-known local singing group the Constantia Brothers. Lunch on the run
Saporita, Norwich
If life has shifted up a gear and you only have time for a quick lunch, pop to family-run Italian Saporita. Tucked away on the cobbled street of St Andrews Hill, this is the only place in Norwich to serve traditional pizza by the slice (they’re big, trust us). Perfect for lunch on the run, mid shop snack or a cheap family dine. You can even grab an Aperol Spritz or Peroni for that near European experience.

Cheeky Chip Stop
The Bucket List, Overstrand
You can’t beat chips up at the coast and these guys are certainly shaking things up with their creative toppings. They include sweet chilli, smoked cheddar and aioli and chicken gravy, broken pie lid and aioli. Grab a bucket from their bright orange cater pod and create your own table for two on Overstrand cliff top.

Horticulturist Heaven
Lime Kiln Kitchen, Thetford
Lime Kiln Kitchen at Thetford Garden Centre is incredibly cool with its eclectic decor ranging from colonial to Victorian and a nod to Art Deco. Dig out your diva
No. Twenty 9, Burnham Market
Looking for somewhere stylish to catch up with a gal pal and a chance to dig out some fancy pants and pearls? Surrounded by large prints of film and music legends such as Marley, Monroe and Reed, this Grade II listed building has all the sophistication that these stars (and you) deserve. Sunset Serenade
Coldham Hall Tavern, Surlingham
It’s hard to pick my favourite picturesque country pub as we’re truly spoiled for choice in Norfolk. However, Coldham Hall Tavern, with its riverside location, beautiful garden and stunning sunsets, is one of my favourites. #lovelocal – these guys are on top of their food footprint with beef from Yare Valley, veggies from Framingham Earl and wine from the village vineyard Winbirri. PS – worth checking out their wine tours for next year.
