Matcha made in heaven? An alternative to the coffee hit - matcha packs a powerful punch
We are living in a coffee-drinking age. But what if you don’t drink it? Matcha is now taking on the coffee café culture. This brightly coloured tea can be seen in the hands of sports stars, health enthusiasts, celebrities and chefs.
A green, energising machine, it’s packed with nutritional antioxidants (one serving has the same number as 10 servings of regular green tea), fibre, chlorophyll and vitamins. It boosts metabolism and burns calories. It also detoxifies, calms the mind and relaxes the body, enhances mood and aids in concentration, and it’s nearly calorie-free.
It’s made of finely ground green tea leaves. As opposed to regular green tea plants, those destined for matcha are grown in the shade for around three weeks prior to harvesting, which results in higher levels of theanine and caffeine, so your fix won’t leave you crashing half an hour later. The stems and veins of the plant are removed and it is ground, resulting in a powder that is dissolved in a liquid, typically water or milk.
As well as taking it as a tea, it can be added to porridge, smoothies or yoghurt to give you a boost in the morning.
