Enjoy the fruits of an early morning June harvest, says Judith Taylor, our voice of farming from Ludham.
On the veggie patch
It’s a very busy time on the veg patch and, apart from rhubarb, probably the first time you will be able to harvest this year’s crops including beetroot, new potatoes, asparagus, salad leaves, broad beans and gooseberries. There is plenty to plant too including broccoli and carrots.
I always think of the three Ws in June:
• Weed ruthlessly
• Water regularly
• Watch out for pests such as slugs and snails, cabbage white caterpillars, carrot fly and black fly.
If you haven’t already done it, make sure you net your fruit bushes against hungry birds
