Today’s farmshops have come along way from a few local vegetables and farm reaered meats, but Padstow Farm Shop is making waves with its own home grown and homemade pasta.

The Padstow Farm Shop on Trethillick Farm prides itself on offering local produce, but its Padstow Pasta is attracting national attention. The pasta is made from durum wheat grown on the farm, and milled in nearby Newquay. It then comes back to the shop where it is made in to pasta – and dried in the shop.

“It’s delicious,” says shops manager Lucy Cross. “It has quite a nutty flavour. It’s made from 100 per cent durum wheat and water – there is no salt or additives. It’s very much like wholemeal pasta. Customers can see it made in the shop, it’s sold dry, but if we are making it, people can buy it fresh – although I think it needs about 12 hours to dry so its al dente.”

This is their fourth season of growing durum wheat and selling pasta – which sells nationally through their own online shop and is available in seven different styles including rigatoni, spaghetti and linguini. The farm’s durum wheat flour is also supplied to Jamie Oliver’s 15 Cornwall restaurant to make its pasta. Padstow Pasta is also set to feature on hit show The Hungry Sailors show this month.

The Farm Shop is on the Trevone/Padstow coastal path and its wide range of produce includes farm reared meat which won the Best Butcher / Meat Producer of the Year at the prestigious Cornwall Life Food & Drink Awards 2012. The shop also features the best in local cheeses, chutneys, seasonal vegetables, ice creams and cold drinks.
