Café du Soleil, situated along the beautiful Stour river on Pound Lane, draws its culinary influences from Mediterranean France and Italy. This includes pizzas made in authentic style in the restaurant’s wood-burning oven with flour imported from Naples.

5. Great British Pizza Co

If you haven’t tried it yet, where have you been?! Every media outlet is praising the Great British Pizza Co in the cool town of Margate with some saying it’s the “best pizza on the planet”. While this may be somewhat hyperbolic, the pizza certainly has a great reputation with diners for its thin and crispy base topped with simple, well made and locally sourced ingredients.

What to order: although seasonally changing, expect pizzas such as chorizo and chilli or peppers with Kentish goat’s curd and basil. With a round of beers or a carafe of wine, you can enjoy the laid back atmosphere and tropical, neon décor.

6. Follies

Maximalist interior design greets guests who visit Follies in Folkestone, a restaurant ran by two sisters who gained acclaim through their pop-up pizza stalls a few years ago and have built up a cult following of pizza lovers. The restaurant today serves thin, hand-stretched pizzas with inventive and classic toppings.

What to order: we love the sound of the finocchiona with mozzarella, fennel salami, olives and rocket or the seafood-heavy smoked salmon with mozzarella, garlic prawns and rocket.
