A Herts success story, Shaken Cow has built a loyal following with its fun and original take on the US milk bar
Did you know Herts has its very own chain of quirky milkshake bars? Shaken Cow opened its first ‘milk bar’ in St Albans back in 2009, and since then further shops have sprung up in Welwyn GC, Hertford, Berkhamsted and Harpenden, with more openings and an e-commerce site planned this year.
Founder Lee Hughes, who grew up in Tring and lives in St Albans, was 28 when he started the company, and is responsible for creating the chain’s unique and delicious range of milkshakes, hot chocolates and smoothies.
‘My absolute passion is creating milkshakes for the whole family to enjoy,’ he explains. ‘I have a major sweet tooth, so it was a natural progression from university jobs in catering to a light-bulb moment of making chocolate bars into delicious creamy milkshakes. I’ve always been someone who strives to be different and I think that comes through in all parts of the brand and product.’
Some of the more quirky drinks in Shaken Cow’s menu include the Homer milkshake (toffee, fudge and doughnut), the Bugs Bunny smoothie (carrot and pineapple) and Reese’s Peanut Butter Cup hot chocolate. To celebrate Valentine’s Day this month, the stores are running a February ‘Love-In’ promotion, with special products including a Lindor hot chocolate. Next month there is an Easter special promotion that will include a Crème Egg Overload milkshake topped with whipped cream and mini-eggs.
Drinks start at £3.25. The full menu is at theshakencow.com
