Sunday afternoons are made for lazing in a cosy pub, beer in hand and an overflowing plate of delicious roast dinner on the table. In no particular order, we pick some of our favourite places for Sunday lunch in Cornwall.
Amélies were awarded the prestigious ‘Best Sunday Roast’ at the Cornwall Life Food & Drink Awards in 2016 and it’s a well deserved accolade that’s still relevant today. The Sunday menu changes regularly but the quality is consistent and the occasion is made all the more special with live chill-out music on the baby grand piano taking place from 1pm each week.
The Two Clomes is a homely county pub; ideal for spending a lazy Sunday with the family indulging in a traditional roast lunch without the hassle of washing up. Expect thick and succulent slices of tender meat accompanied by humongous homemade Yorkshire puddings and ladles of thick gravy. The pub is also home to a large selection of beers, ales, wines and spirits so unwind after your feast with a digestif whilst you soak up the bonhomie atmosphere.
Whilst the Sloop Inn may be renowned for its fantastic ale and cider selection, the pub also boasts an inviting restaurant (The Captain’s Table) located upstairs from the bar. Intimacy is one of the restaurant’s key aspects with only 26 covers available to ensure the best service - so pre-booking is recommended to avoid disappointment. On the Sunday menu you’ll find a choice of beef, chicken or pork with all the trimmings and there’s a free bottle of red, white or rosé on the house when you buy two roast lunches.
Nestled amongst the beauty of the Cornish coastline The Gurnard’s Head is a dining pub that embraces a slower pace of life. The inn prides itself on Sunday lunches with an upmarket twist. Think rib of beef with red wine gravy and roast chicken with bread sauce and thyme. Diners are invited to take advantage of the offers available exclusively on Sunday, when two courses are priced at just £18 or three for £23. This quaint pub also overlooks the majesty of the Atlantic sea, making this the perfect place for a pit stop after a coastal stroll.
The Old Bottlery Restaurant, Healeys Cyder Farm
The whole family is invited along to a hearty roast at The Old Bottlery; muddy boots and paws alike. After a fun family day out exploring Healeys Cyder Farm, you’ll have worked up an appetite big enough for one the restaurant’s renowned Sunday lunches. Take your pick from farm reared Cornish pork or beef, served with red cabbage braised in Healeys wine, cauliflower cheese with Scrumpy mustard with plenty of sage and apple stuffing and seasonal Cornish veg. The speciality of a roast at Healeys is the Cyder Farm’s very own ingredients used throughout the dish.
The Cornish Arms, Hayle
This charming and rustic pub has a tempting Sunday menu that’s bound to agree with all visitors (including dogs who are also invited along for the feast). Diners are spoilt for choice with up to four meats on offer and in the winter, Sunday lunches can be enjoyed fireside by the toasty log fire with Fido at your feet. The pub supplies a number of St Austell ales and guest craft beers so stay a while and finish your weekend with a pint and good company.
Airy, bright and modern, The Loft can be found tucked away in the artists’ quarter of St Ives. The restaurant prides itself on using locally sourced ingredients in its Sunday lunches with a choice of roast beef or chicken on the menu from midday through to 3pm every Sunday. If you wish to enjoy a classic no nonsense roast in a modern and sleek environment, you would be hard pressed to find a better alternative than The Loft.
Sat at the top of Mitchell Hill with stunning views of the magnificent Truro cathedral, The Rising Sun plays host to a delightful rural village atmosphere despite it being only a stones throw from the city centre. The pub is notorious for its incredibly moreish roast lunches with roasted Cornish top side of beef, shoulder of lamb and pork loin with crackling headlining the Sunday menu. Treat yourself to a homemade sticky toffee pudding or chocolate fondant afterwards; it is the weekend after all.
The Victoria Inn, Perranuthnoe
The Victoria Inn nestled in the sleepy coastal village of Perranuthnoe near Penzance is one of the best kept secrets in the area that we simply had to share. Visitors can look forward to the best cuts of Cornish meats accompanied alongside a generous portion of locally harvested greens. The lunch menu is subject to change but our favourite roast so far is the pork with curly cracking and a side of black pudding. After committing the ultimate carbicide, take a walk down to Perranuthnoe beach to walk off those extra weekend calories.
Waters Edge Restaurant, Greenbank Hotel, Falmouth
The Greenbank Hotel believes a roast dinner should be a meal to savour and with three courses on the Sunday menu for just £22, there are plenty of reasons to loosen the waistband in preparation for a long and lazy lunch to finish the weekend. The menu changes weekly but you can always expect a mouth watering selection of roast meats and vegetables served with a side of stunning table views across Falmouth’s harbour.
