Sharon Struckman discovers a Hertfordshire farmer creating an alternative and versatile oil for cooking and drizzling

Oscar Harding, a dynamic young entrepreneur with drive, vision and knowledge beyond his years, has produced an exceptional rapeseed oil on a Hertfordshire farm.

In 2012, Oscar saw an opportunity to make something out of the rapeseed that grows on his family’s farm. After research, he discovered the health benefits of the oil, which has half the saturated fats of olive oil and is rich in omega oils – a healthy alternative to other cooking oils.

Duchess Oil is an extra virgin rapeseed oil that is grown, pressed and bottled on a farm in Sawbridgeworth. It takes teamwork throughout the year to produce it, Oscar says, and with the help of local businesses it is sold in shops and restaurants around the area. Rapeseed oil is very versatile – fabulous both for cooking at high temperatures, such as needed for stir-frys, as well as for use cold on salads and pizza.

Oscar has now branched out and made a horseradish vinaigrette with his oil - a perfect complement for salads and fresh vegetables – and is looking to expand the range in the future.

Passionate about British farming, Oscar believes it is important to know where our food comes from. This approach, combined with modern farming techniques, helps him make his oil without losing any of its goodness.
