The village of Woolsery in North Devon is playing host to the Women’s Institute Great North Devon Food Debate next month.
Woolsery’s WI is running the event as part of National Federation of Women’s Institutes Great Food Debate campaign that looks to tackle many of the issues regarding food security, such as food supply and the roles and responsibilities of individuals, organisations and government.
The debate will focus on food issues on a local scale in an attempt to address problems involving food consumption, supermarket influence, environmental challenges and the role of UK farming.
The evening, taking place in Woolsery Community Hall, will feature a number of speakers representing different parts of the food industry in North Devon. The public will then have the opportunity to question these speakers on food issues in the local areas that affect them.
Jan Ashworth, Woolsery WI President, explains: “The WI is a charity that has always campaigned on issues that matter to women and their community and what could be more important than a safe, sustainable and nutritious food system.”
“This event aims to offer an opportunity for North Devon, where food production and the rural economy is such an integral part of many people’s lives, to have its say in this major global issue.”
This free public event takes place in Woolsery Community Hall, at 7.30pm on 19 September 2013. Light refreshments and local food sampling will be available at the end of the night.
