Yorkshire Life Lunch - Kaye Arms, Grange Moor Wakefield

Diners celebrate fine Yorkshire Food in good company PHOTOGRAPHS BY ANDY BULMER

It was at the end of 2007 that Paul Andrews-Garth and his wife Helen moved into the Kaye Arms which sits between Huddersfield and Wakefield in West Yorkshire.

The hilltop country inn already enjoyed a reputation for good food - it won dining pub of the year at the Yorkshire Food & Wine Awards 2003-2004. The Andrews-Garths who have more than 30 years in the hospitality industry, have been building on that fine reputation since they arrived using all the finest locally produced ingredients they can find to ensure the quality of their dishes. Their aim is to make this already very welcoming hostelry even more of a dining destination.

And so the Kaye Arms was the comfortable setting for our Yorkshire Life Lunch and the bar buzzed with conversation as guests arrived to a champagne welcome before sitting down to a four course lunch. Paul, who not only mingled with guests but also served during lunch with his wife Helen, said he was glad to be back at the 'coalface' of the business and to be able to spend time with such lovely people.

Changes have been made mainly to encourage the greater use of locally produced food which Paul said was essential for quality and to do his bit to support the local economy.

The Yorkshire Life Lunch menu reflected this desire to promote Yorkshire produce with salmon, lamb, rhubarb and cheeses all selected from within the county. The wines were from 'out of town' but even they were supplied by a North Yorkshire company, Pagendam Pratt Wine Cellars, Tockwith, and chosen by Alex Bussey, their area sales manager. Attentive service is also an essential ingredient as far as Paul is concerned which not only adds to guests' enjoyment but also encourages them to return.

Our food and wine consultant Annie Stirk had no doubts that she would return to enjoy the food as well as the welcome, congratulating the chef Simon Dyson and his team as well as the Andrews-Garths on a fantastic meal. She added: 'Paul and Helen have been here only for a short time but what a difference they have made. The Yorkshire produce they have used is all within a short distance and prepared beautifully. The selection of wines is fabulous and all in all a wonderful lunch worthy of a journey out.'
