Beautiful gardens to visit in Pindars, Lyminster, near Arundel, Sussex
Densely planted herbaceous borders, dotted with large containers, surround open lawns at Pindars. The garden has been created from an agricultural field over the past 40 years by enthusiastic owners Jocelyne and Clive Newman. They were attracted to the site because the plot is a good size and conveniently located for their work.Although the garden is a shared project, Jocelyne is the driving force and Clive describes himself as the 'hard landscape operative'. It has evolved over time, initially with the emphasis on a play area as Jocelyne ran a nursery school at home. More elaborate planting now features with a focus on coloured foliage and texture, from plants such as heucheras, sedums and grasses. "We work extremely well as a team, carrying out major projects together, but having our own sections. Clive mows, cuts the hedges and grows vegetables, while I design, propagate plants and tend the borders and around 70 pots," explains Jocelyne. They enjoy sharing the garden with visitors but this may well be their last open day with the National Gardens Scheme because they plan in future to open only for organised groups.
