Rural homes across Sussex have seen the price of heating oil halve in the past two years and, as a result, the 21,000 oil households in the county can afford to keep the heating on for longer and enjoy a warmer home this winter without increasing their fuel bills.

However, there are a few important things to consider before you turn up the thermostat…

Be prepared

Oil heating systems are robust and reliable but there are a few key things to do ahead of the cold weather:

• Have your boiler serviced by an OFTEC registered technician to ensure the work is completed to a high standard to avoid any potential breakdowns over winter

• Check you oil tank is in good condition and look out for any signs of leaking oil such as dead grass or plants around the tank or higher than expected fuel usage

• Bleed your radiators to make them more effective

• Keep an eye on your heating timers as the weather changes and adjust accordingly

Top up your tank

Make sure you have enough heating oil to get you through a cold winter but also:

• Purchase you heating oil as early as possible to avoid any last minute rushes

• Research and join a local oil buying club to make even more savings

• Install some security measures, such as a lock or alarm, as winter is the time of year oil thieves may target households

Time to upgrade?

With oil prices so low, now might be the time to consider upgrading your heating system by:

• Installing a modern, condensing boiler to reduce your fuel consumption by an average of 24% and your CO2 emissions by 33% if you currently have a standard efficiency boiler

• Improving your roof insulation as this is where most heat is lost. Also check the insulation for the outside walls and downstairs flooring

• Purchasing some thicker curtains in your main rooms to keep the heat in

Know the facts

• Low room temperatures increase the risk of flu and respiratory problems

• Keep the temperature of your main room at least 21C

• All other regularly used rooms should be kept at 18C
