Religious community
Ampleforth Abbey has been home to a community of Benedictine Monks since 1802. It is open to the public throughout the year and guided tours are also available which offer a greater insight into the history of Ampleforth. The abbey is also home to the co-educational independent boarding school, Ampleforth College.
Apples galore
The country’s northern-most commercial orchard is here in the village, where about 2,000 trees cover more than two hectares of land. There’s a chance to buy the locally produced cider, including Ampleforth Abbey Cider and Ampleforth Cider Brandy or just take some apples home to have your own piece of Ampleforth in a pie.
Walkers’ paradise
Ampleforth is located on the edge of the North York Moors National Park, making it an ideal place to enjoy wonderful walking and take in the breathtaking scenery.
White Horse
The White Horse Inn is named after the figure of a white horse etched into a hillside a few miles west of Ampleforth. It was designed and funded by Thomas Taylor, a Victorian businessman, and was cut in 1857. The White Horse is 314ft long and 228ft high and about 20 people could stand on the grass island which forms the eye, though walking on the horse is now strongly discouraged.
