A peaceful North Yorkshire village full of charm

Historic village

Green Hammerton was first mentioned in the Domesday Book but as Hambreton, a place name which is now reflected in both this small village and in neighbouring Kirk Hammerton.

Community first

The village has a strong sense of community. Residents supported by the parish council and other community groups, strive to make it a thriving place to live and work. In 2010, the modern Green Hammerton Village Hall was opened and is used for a number of events. It’s next to the playing fields and is managed by the Green Hammerton Recreational Charity.

Royal visit

During the six Silver Jubilee tours of 1977, the Queen and Duke of Edinburgh visited Green Hammerton on July 13th. The royal couple were on their way from the Great Yorkshire Show in Harrogate to York, but paused briefly in their police-escorted Rolls Royce in front of the Bay Horse Inn while school children waved.

Think local

There are a host of nearby attractions including RHS Harlow Carr the botanical gardens in Harrogate, glorious Fountains Abbey owned by the National Trust and of course all the shopping and sight seeing you can manage in York including the Minster. Coney Garth Hill, west of Kirk Hammerton Lane commands views of York and beyond. It may have been used as an observation post by the Romans and a broach with characteristic patterned edges was found there. A Roman coffin chiselled out of millstone grit was unearthed in Green Hammerton in 1970.
