Somerset’s stunning views feature in a new book
It is no secret that England is home to some of the most breathtaking views in the world, and Simon Jenkins’ England’s 100 Best Views attempts to harness and describe that beauty within a book.
Author and columnist Simon has picked 100 of the very best views from around the country. A mix of iconic and lesser-known views made the final cut, and each is accompanied by a fascinating story related to their historical, geographical, botanical and architectural backgrounds.
Further questions are prompted by the author, including how do humans enhance or ruin a landscape? And what makes a landscape beautiful?
Of course when compiling such a book, trips to Somerset were necessary, and eight of the 100 views featured are from Somerset.
Creech Hill towards the Somerset Levels is included in the list.
Simon Jenkins writes “Where best to view the Somerset Levels westwards from the Wiltshire downs? The prospect is drenched in English history.”
Of the view from Glastonbury Tor he says “There are few sights lovelier than Glastonbury Tor at dawn”, and we can’t argue with that!
