A very fine fair

Holkham Country Fair comes to north Norfolk this month with a spectacular line-up for all the family, as Saskia Rimbaut reports.
All of the fun of Holkham Country Fair is back at the end of this month - and its looking to be better than ever. Held over two days in the attractive, historic grounds of the Holkham Estate, the event has more than 200 trade, fine food and craft stands set to show. Visitors to the show - which was originally started in 1977 as a way of teaching children about the traditions of the countryside - will be able to head to the Grand Ring for rousing entertainment in the form of The Royal Regimental Band. And for those who prefer a little more action, Gulliver’s Carnival professional team of stunt riders will be out in force showcasing their dare-devil Victorian stunts. Add to this the wonderfully curious-sounding Dog and Duck Show, and you’re in for a busy family day out.
If you’re keen to get your hands dirty and get in on the action yourself, there are plenty of activities you can get involved in at this year’s fair, including clay pigeon shooting, archery, fishing and target golf. Alternatively make the most of the traditional fairground rides, or witness the spectacular Freefall Parachute Display Team put on their fast-paced and thrilling show.
When the hunger pangs strike you can visit the Fine Food Village, sponsored by Norfolk brewery Woodforde’s, promising tasty locally-sourced food and drink, including from stallholders The East Coast Chilli Company, Perfick Pork, Bon Bakery, J E Howard Butchers and Norfolk Brewhouse.
New for 2015, visitors will be able to make the most of the weekend by camping in tents or caravans. What a great opportunity to explore the fair during the day and settle down to watch a local band come evening.
Also this year Holkham Country Fair has the honour of an RAF Battle of Britain flypast by a Douglas C47 Dakota, as a tribute to the significant role the plane played in the Second World War. For those who are wanting to witness this evocative spectacle, make sure you get to the show on the Sunday.
