We are talking one of Cheshire’s most desirable postcodes here. Alderley Edge is the fifth richest village in the UK according to recent research by Savills. Based on Land Registry figures, the survey looked at houses sold for more than 1m in the past four years.

Alderley is top of the northern villages with 36 houses sold more than a cool mil. Of course, it isn’t just the movers and shakers, pop stars and premiership footballers who make this a glamorous place to be, just look at the landscape.

The dramatic red sandstone escarpment with dramatic views and ancient copper mines are the stuff of ancient as well as modern legend.

Golden legendsThe fact that several ancient gold bars were found at Alderley Edge in the 1990s only adds to the place’s magical allure. As most people now know, Alderley Edge is supposed to be the place where King Arthur’s Knights slumber, in wait for the day when they will have to awaken and rise up to defend England. The story goes ‘There will come a day when these men awake from their enchanted slumber and will descend the plain, decide the fate of a great battle and save their country. This shall happen when George the son of George shall reign.’

Supermarket sweepNews that Waitrose wants a piece of Alderley Edge fortune has been met with a mixed response from residents. The John Lewis owned grocer is planning to open a 6,200sq ft hope at The Parade, at the start of August.

The new store will create 40 jobs. However, some locals are questioning the need for another Waitrose when there is one down the road atnearby Wilmslow.

The market has become something of a local tradition and prides itself on its authenticity. That means you can actually buy goodies from the people who make or grow them, from artisan bread to local honey. It runs from 9am to 1pm and the next market will be Sunday May 8th. Glitzy pastBefore the Only way is Essex here was MTV’s reality show, Living on the Edge and the C4 show Goldplated. Not necessarily flattering in their portrayal of the Cheshire set but let’s face it, Alderley is no stranger to myths about its unabashed affluence.
