When you think of walks that take in extensive gardens and beautiful buildings within Lancashire, there are many locations across the county. Everybody has their favourite spot, but for us, there are two places that stand out from the rest, and they are markedly different from one another.
The first is the area around Rivington, many of you will have taken the walk up to the summit of Rivington Pike and experience the views of the West Pennines Moors and the surrounding area which includes Anglezarke Reservoir.
Close to the Pike are the extensive grounds of Lever Park, built in 1904 by Lord Leverhulme. The park contains a replica of Liverpool Castle as well as Italian and Asian style gardens.
Over in the Ribble Valley, there is Stonyhurst College which was founded in 1593. Although access to the school grounds are limited to special open days, the area surrounding the college has become a popular destination for walkers. Not least in part to the introduction of the Tolkien Trail which was created to follow in the footsteps of author J.R.R. Tolkien who regularly stayed at the college.
The walk starts out at the nearby village of Hurst Green and passes by Stonyhurst College as well as navigating the edge of both the Hodder and Ribble rivers.
