Photographs from Carnival week, 20-26th June 2010
Carnival week (20th–26th June) was heralded by warm sunny weather which, for once, stayed with us throughout. The scarecrow competition kicked off the week’s events to be followed by two new attractions: sheep races and Morris dancing by the Jug Men. On Wednesday it was the fell race and barbecue, on Thursday the barrel race was won by Woody’s Round Up with the Squawking Squaws first ladies team home, then on Friday evening children traversed the rope course at Lea Green.
Carnival Day began with the judging of the floats, undertaken by Harry Foster, Simon and Gilly Groom. Then Carnival Queen, Connie Dalton with her entourage and the Ashover Marching Band led the procession to Lea Green where numerous stalls, side-shows, competitions and races kept everyone entertained. Holloway Tai Chi Group gave a demonstration, Ashover Band played and there was a spectacular, nail-biting demonstration of precision flying by the Red Arrows with Barrows squadron! A hotly contested tug-of-war competition saw the team from Lea as eventual winners.
Holloway Playgroup’s ‘Aliens’ won the best float and fancy dress winners included ‘Dorothy and the Tin Man’ by Abigail Harper and Aaron Slater, ‘The Viking Ship’ by William and George Adlington, Ruben Lambeth, Adam and Jessica Matthews and Alice Priest, and ‘Grumpy Old Women’ by Helen Galvin and Emily Maycock. Winning scarecrows were by Bumpsadaisy Playgroup, Lea Primary School, the Kinsella and Lambeth families and Mrs Thompson. Kristian Edwards won the fell race in a time of 32:26 with Lewis Banton second and Christine Howard first lady.
All the hard work paid off, so thank you to everyone who supported the various events. All money raised goes to help community, sport and educational groups within the village.
