The villages of Byfleet and West Byfleet are a hot spot for food and sports enthusiasts
Owned by Ben Piette and Lornette Valentine, the highly rated London House restaurant in West Byfleet is an absolute gem. Their Thursday Supper Club, launched post-lockdown, features a fun, tasty and “casual” menu of four-courses for £30 every week. They have also launched Brunch etc, a pop-up café next door.
Sweet Passion Cakes have been improving everyone in West Byfleet’s celebrations ever since throwing open their doors five years ago. Step inside and you are immediately whisked off to an Austro-Hungarian patisserie thanks to the deliciously decadent selection on offer.
A butcher’s shop for more than 100 years, James Lowe took over the premises in 2013 and they haven’t looked back since. Surrey Wildlife Trust supply them with superb Belted Galloway Beef from Wisley, just down the road from the shop, when available and the team work hard to ensure the provenance and traceability of their meats. They won Butcher of the Year at the 2019 Surrey Life Food & Drink Awards.
The golf club that is synonymous with West Byfleet is found less than a 10-minute walk from the train station. Established in 1906, West Byfleet Golf Club is a traditional members club and popular among those who know their pitch from their putt. There are also a number of hyper exclusive members-only clubs nearby.

River Wey Navigation
If you fancy a picturesque winter walk, then it’s possible to head out of West Byfleet along the River Wey Navigation, down passed the popular Anchor pub at Pyrford Lock, near RHS Wisley, onto the stunning Newark Priory ruins and into the beautiful village of Ripley.
Byfleet Fire Station
Having closed in the early 1960s, Byfleet Fire Station still holds a special place in the hearts of villagers. The village fire brigade originated from Sir Whittaker Ellis’s garden potting shed in the 1870s, and the fire station is a welcome reminder of the village’s heritage, much of which has otherwise been replaced by more modern builds.
When people talk about the birthplace of British motorsport and aviation, Brooklands, they tend to reference Weybridge rather than West Byfleet but they’re both in fact bang on its doorstep – along with the fabulous Brooklands Hotel, the infamously luxuriant St George’s Hill estate and the uber exclusive The Wisley golf club, among other highlights.
With the Basingstoke Canal to the north and Wey Navigation to the east, West Byfleet is not all about roaring motor vehicles and top car marques at the local golf club. Life takes an altogether more relaxed pace along the river and Byfleet Boat House is a celebration of the Wind in the Willows ideal.
